I started my career as an Operating Department Practitioner, and subsequently moved into research and lecturing after completing my DPhil at Oxford. During those years I worked with patients suffering from movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and Multiple Sclerosis. Working with surgical instruments gave me a thorough grounding for using high precision tools safely and an understanding of how to get the best out of them.
I have always been creative as well as science minded, and a few years ago a good friend introduced me to jewellery making, where I soon found that my niche was working with copper wire making fully handcrafted pieces using genuine gemstones. When I discovered that many of the patients I saw found it difficult to undo the tiny clasps on conventional jewellery I started to create designs that were easy to put on and take off by using no clasps or larger clasps that were easy to grasp.
After many successful pieces I decided to create Wire and Gemstone Ltd. Since then I have had requests for bespoke jewellery items, wedding tiara’s, and fascinators. I have also created wirework that has been worn on the Hollywood red carpet and made an elaborate crown for my own wedding! Visit our gallery to see some of the pieces that we have made.
Martin and I now live and work from our lovely Dutch barge called Skûtsje (pronounced scoot-shuh). She has her very own website called Skûtsje Barge, and you can learn more about her here: www.skutsjebarge.co.uk. We both have a variety of interests from canoeing to folk dancing.
Bespoke jewellery items and gifts
At Wire and Gemstone Ltd we believe that you would like high quality bespoke items for that special gift or occasion. Something that reflects the unique person and occasion. Every piece is handcrafted with wire using genuine gemstones and/or Swarovski crystals, and our customers are involved with every step of the process.
Our courses are designed for people who have a keen interest to learn wirework in detail. Unlike many craft courses, that aim to have an item finished quickly to take home. Our courses at Wire and Gemstone Ltd concentrate on technique with attention to detail for the correct use of materials, tools and design. They aim to equip you with skills that you can replicate confidently at home to produce a variety of beautifully handcrafted items way beyond the course. Therefore, not only are the courses fun, but they also offer value for money.
Our courses are run locally within Lechlade-On-Thames on the outskirts of the Cotswolds. My husband Martin, is now also integral to the company, helping with the teaching on our courses. Check out the Courses page to see what we have on offer.
